Egor Abramenko’s major debut was awarded the Asteroide Award during the 20th edition of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, the main science fiction event in Italy, that came to a close on Tuesday, November 3rd. The venue took place from October 29 to November 3 for the first time both live and online (on MYmovies.it).
The Asteroide Award is given to the best science fiction, horror or fantasy film by emerging directors in the Neon | Competition section. The winner of the competition has been chosen by an international jury of world renowned film professionals and experts of the fantastic genre. Members of the Asteroide Award Jury 2020 were cartoonist and writer Bepi Vigna, scriptwriter and writer Javier S. Donate, and producer and screenwriter Brendan McCarthy.
A debut film which deftly observes the oppressive self-absorbed Soviet bureaucracy of the 1980s as it fails to recognize the danger of a newly arrived extraterrestrial creature. The director has created a clever, terrifying, and truly remarkable film. — commented on this decision the festival.
Egor Abramenko's picture has also received the Audience Award: it was chosen by people who watched the movie on MyMovies platform (score of 4,37/5).
The film has already been released in America, Australia, and the Baltic states. "Sputnik"'s German release started with a participation in Fantasy Film Fest. On the 18th of September "Sputnik" also premiered in Mexico, Bolivia and Ecuador. "Sputnik" is already streaming on OTT and VOD-platforms in UK, and will also be streaming in Australia and New Zealand from November 2020. The screenings in other countries will depend on the pandemic situation.
"Sputnik"'s online Russian premiere took place in April 2020 on the more.tv streaming service (part of "National Media Group"). From the very beginning and up to now "Sputnik" has been the service's most viewed and successful movie release of the year.
